LTE-based Satellite Communications in LEO Mega-Constellations
نویسندگان
چکیده
The integration of satellite and terrestrial networks is a promising solution for extending broadband coverage to areas not connected to a terrestrial infrastructure, as also demonstrated by recent commercial and standardisation endeavours. However, the large delays and Doppler shifts over the satellite channel pose severe technical challenges to traditional terrestrial systems, as LTE or 5G. In this paper, two architectures are proposed for a LEO mega-constellation realising a satellite-enabled LTE system, in which the onground LTE entity is either an eNB (Sat-eNB) or a Relay Node (Sat-RN). The impact of satellite channel impairments as large delays and Doppler shifts on LTE PHY/MAC procedures is discussed and assessed. The proposed analysis shows that, while carrier spacings, Random Access, and RN attach procedures do not pose specific issues, HARQ requires substantial modifications. Moreover, advanced handover procedures will be also required due to the satellites’ movement. Copyright c © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Internet Routing over LEO Satellite Constellations
Satellite constellations ooer interesting perspectives for Internet traac routing, since they beneet from a worldwide coverage and do not have the main drawback of geosynchronous satellites : propagation delay. However, because of their low altitude, LEO satellites are in constant motion and exhibit speciic issues for routing. This article presents a general architecture applicable to the integ...

متن کاملRadio resource management across multiple protocol layers in satellite networks: a tutorial overview
Satellite transmissions have an important role in telephone communications, television broadcasting, computer communications, maritime navigation, and military command and control. Moreover, in many situations they may be the only possible communication set-up. Recent trends in telecommunications indicate that four major growth market/service areas are: messaging and navigation services (wirele...
متن کاملAutonomous Constellation Maintenance System
At present, a large number of surveillance, scientific, and commercial communications constellations are being actively pmsued by DoD, NASA, and the commercial space community. In many cases, these constellations will be made up of "LightSats" or small, low cost spacecraft. F or such systems, operations costs, which are large in traditional systems, can become a dominant element of total system...
متن کاملStaged Deployment of Communications Satellite Constellations in Low Earth Orbit
The “traditional” way of designing constellations of communications satellites in low Earth orbit is to optimize the design for a specified global capacity. This approach is based on a forecast of the expected number of users and their activity level, both of which are highly uncertain. This can lead to economic failure if the actual demand is significantly smaller than the one predicted. This ...
